Because Jesus had to be put in the tomb hastily as the holy days would begin at 6: 00 P.M. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus had very little time to properly prepare the body of Jesus. Some of the women had noted where Jesus' tomb was located and when Sunday came, the women not knowing about the resurrection brought more spices and oil to finish the burial process (Luke 23:55-56).

An angel of the Lord.

Mat 28:1 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.

Mat 28:2 And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.

A:

Each of the gospels gives a different account as to who was in the tomb when the women came.

In the original New Testament account (Mark 16:5), it was a young man, who told the women that Jesus was risen, instructing them to send the disciples to Galilee.

In Matthew chapter 28, an angel came down and sat on the stone outside the sepulchre, telling them to go quickly to tell the disciples, so we never learn whether anyone was in the tomb.

In Luke 24:4, there were two men in shining garments inside the tomb - no doubt angels.

In John 20:1-2, Mary Magdalene went alone to the tomb. She left as soon as she saw the stone was moved, so we are not told if anyone was inside. However we learn later on that she returned after Peter and the beloved disciple had left, and she saw two angels inside the tomb.

Archbishop Peter Carnley wrote:

"The presence of discrepancies might be a sign of historicity if we had four clearly independent but slightly different versions of the story, if only for the reason that four witnesses are better than one. But, of course, it is now impossible to argue that what we have in the four gospel accounts of the empty tomb are four contemporaneous but independent accounts of the one event. Modern redactional studies of the traditions account for the discrepancies as literary developments at the hand of later redactors of what was originally one report of the empty tomb...

There is no suggestion that the tomb was discovered by different witnesses on four different occasions, so it is in fact impossible to argue that the discrepancies were introduced by different witnesses of the one event; rather, they can be explained as four different redactions for apologetic and kerygmatic reasons of a single story originating from one source."
