He faced:

  • Running out of food and water
  • His crew wanting to turn back and also wanting to kill him.
  • His boat actually started to fall apart on his first voyage but it quickly got fixed up and Christopher Columbus and his crew were able to sail fine after that. They had to keep observing the boat to see if anything was broken so it could be fixed earlier so it couldn't grow to bigger problems.
  • He also didn't have a map, all he had was a compass and an astrolabe.
  • He wrote in his diary in 1492: Lavinia, "We atebiscuit which was a powder swarming with worms. It smelt of rats. ... We ate sawdust from the boards."
  • Risks of contracting scurvy, caused by lack of vitamin C found in fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Running out of fresh food and water
  • Lack of wind-if the sea was too calm, the boats would not have been able to progress
  • Weather challenges (storms, rain, etc.)
  • He was robbed and the Santa Maria was abandoned

What problems did Christopher Columbus face on his journey to the Indies?

One of Christopher Columbus's main problems he didn't understand the size of the world and went the wrong way. He went west to go east. He was also a very greedy, mean man. He cheated his own sailors out of the promised reward for spotting land. He stated he saw a light the night before and therefore he was the first to spot land and kept the reward. He cut off the hands of the natives he found because they didn't bring him enough gold. Finally, he did NOT discover America. He found Hispaniola and thought it was India until the day he died.
