There was a surplus of grain and meat, they traded it to Kingsbridge for salt and venison, only to get back stabbed. The first settlers in Jamestown were pillaged and raped shortly after the trade.

There were various difficulties: the early settlers lacked experience in farming and breaking land, the colony was started in a period of bad climate, and there were troubles with the local native tribes. They were more interested in gold mining than growing food, and settled on land the natives did not want because it was so poor. This led to a time of starvation and illness, only broken by the arrival of a new supply fleet from England in 1610.
