South-Southwest
Since the Earth is spherical (shaped like a ball), you can start out from Moscow
in many different directions and wind up in Mexico City. If you're pressed for time
and need to travel the shortest possible route, then you must leave Moscow
toward the northwest, and you arrive in Mexico City after only 6,670 miles.
Besides offering the shortest possible trip, this route has two additional obvious
characteristics: It is both paradoxical and counterintuitive, in our Mercator-based
consciousness. So the next time you have an opportunity to stand next to a
globe of the world, stretch a rubber band between Moscow and Mexico City.
A rubber band obviously takes the shortest route, and you'll see immediately
what route that is, and why.
From the North Pole, South is the only direction that exists ...there is no other direction.
Wherever you want to go from the North Pole, you must head south.
You would be going in a southerly direction.
