They mainly could have been discriminated against or taken advantage of. Also, because of poverty, exploitation, or another issue like those, some immigrants lacked the qualifications (education, experience, etc.) as well as the necessities (money to get settled, place to stay, etc.) for obtaining a job or supporting themselves or their family. Of course, not all immigrants had these disadvantages, but many did.
