Rats may carry a few diseases but so can stray cats and dogs. Rats do not carry rabies as some may suggest and there have been no known cases of this reported in North America. Rats have been kept as pets for centuries and pet rats are very friendly and intelligent. The majority of the population hates rats but this is based on misinformation and ignorance.

They can give you;

Salmonella

Hantavirus

And Lyme Disease

But bare in mind, they can only give you these if they bite/scratch you, or get near you food. So if you keep away you shouldn't get any of those.
