When King Louis was in reign, he accepted a mutual relationship with the Pope, and therefore lost the kingdom's respect. Courts began to accumilate moer power. When it was time to pass on his kingdom, Louis divided it among his three sons. The sons fought constantly for more land, and soon, the court system had taken over and began to rule small areas like THEY were kings, until the Frankish Empire was utterly divided.
