The primary practices of all forms of Buddhism are mindfulness and compassion. There are many ways to practice these, and most Buddhists have some sort of meditation practice, as well as a committment to skillful means of living in every day life. Some of the skillful means toward understanding the true nature of reality are refraining from violence and anger, and practicing charity and compassion. Buddhist monks and nuns have much more complicated meditation practices as well as practices involving making offerings and other symbolic gestures which help them concentrate more fully on being mindful and compassionate.

What is ahimsa and how does it affect the lives of Buddhists?

Ahimsa is really a concept of Yoga in Hinduism. Yoga, in its most true form, is a form of Hindu spiritual practice. Ahimsa is the practice of non-harming. it is one of the 5 Yamas (restraints or limbs) of Yoga. Buddhism has a similar practice found in the Noble Eightfold Path, which is not to kill any sentient being. BTW, many Buddhists, like myself, also practice Yoga because there is a lot of commonality between practices, us Buddhists just don't worry about the Hindu God aspect of the practice.

What activities other than meditating do Buddhists do?

Buddhists practice mindfulness all the time by trying to be aware of who, what and where they are at every moment, and not living in the past or the future. They make pilgrimages, attend ceremonies, make offerings, do prostrations and practice loving kindness to all beings. Not all Buddhists do all these things, as there are many different practices and traditions within the rubric of Buddhism.

Why do Buddhists sometimes worship in silence?

First off, Buddhists don't worship as there no role for a deity in Buddhist practice. Buddhists do however meditate. Meditation is sometimes described as a practice of quieting one's inner turmoil, exiting from daily distractions, focussing on the void. It often requires sitting in a proper balanced position, breathing properly, being still and focussing the mind.
