According to the French constitution, the only national emblem is the French flag. It is important to French people as a symbol of Liberty and all things we won throught the French revolution and our history since. But the flag is just as important, no more and no less, to the French, than the Union Flag is to Britons, or the Star Spangled Banner to Americans.
