For Jehovah's Witnesses dating is not something that is done recreationally or for fun. They believe that when done properly, dating should be carried on with marriage as its goal. So, it should not begin before the person is ready to take on marriage responsibilities. They also believe that idealy this would take place once the person is out of what The Bible refers to as 'the bloom of youth', or once the person has matured into the person they are going to be. There are also different standards when it comes to WITH WHO and HOW dating occurs than what some might be used to. In many cultures, physical intamacy is acceptable between a couple that is dating. Jehovah's Witnesses hold tightly to the standards set out in the bible, and understand that this is a privilege reserved for married couples. They also take seriously the counsel to marry "only in the Lord." (1 Corinthians 7:39; 2 Corinthians 6:14) . This means that the person they would choose to date with a view toward marriage would be someone who shares their respect for scriptural guidelines and principles and lives their life accordingly.
