monito geckos are endangered for two reason.... 1. it is being eaten by the black rat.... and 2. just after world war 2, the us airforce used the island of monito ( the monito geckos only habitat) as a bombing site. because the island is so small, this affected the island a lot and now there are believed to be less than 250 left in the wild, the monito gecko is critically endangered.
Geckos are kept commonly in the reptile hobby and for the most part, are not endangered or restricted. There are few species of gecko that are endangered such as the: Monito Gecko, Reunion Island day gecko.
Geckos are much more a prey item than a predator. Due to geckos small size, vibrant appereance, and soft skin, they make a great meal for larger sized geckos, snakes and other reptiles. Birds of prey, medium-large sized mammals. In the wild, geckos need to be weary of their own species as a baby gecko makes a easy meal.
