What is the plural form of Sergeant Major?

With compound nouns the head noun usually gets the plural form. So:two governors generaltwo passersbytwo sons-in-lawtwo courts martialSome Army ranks are slightly confusing as the important noun is at the rear, in this case the important noun is General, as in Brigadier-General, Major-General, and Lieutenant-General. They are all Generals. The preceding noun merely denoting whether they are 1-, 2-, or 3-star Generals. Therefore the plural of Major-General is Major-Generals.The same rule applies to other ranks (plural of Lieutenant-Colonel is Lieutenant-Colonels and not Lieutenants-Colonel and the plural of Sergeant-Major is Sergeant-Majors and not Sergeants-Major).Another answer:The plural of Sergeant Major is in fact Sergeants Major. The noun major modifies sergeant. The same rule applies to Sergeants First Class and Staff Sergeants. Lieutenant Colonels are junior colonels.

Would a warrant officer have to go to ocs if he wishes to become a regular officer?

He would but most of them don't want to be in the "O" officer series--lieutenant, captain, major... In the Army, there are seven groups of people. The first group is the Lower Enlisted--private through specialist. They come into the service, go through training and are assigned to a unit as workers. Workers who demonstrate the potential for leadership are made into Noncommissioned Officers--sergeants and staff sergeants. They have two functions: more advanced knowledge of their jobs, and leading a few soldiers. There are then Senior NCOs--sergeants first class, master sergeants, first sergeants and sergeants major. They have even more advanced knowledge of their jobs, plus they lead many soldiers. A Division Sergeant Major can lead tens of thousands of soldiers, and a corps sergeant major can lead fifty or sixty thousand. Warrant officers have the most advanced knowledge of their jobs. Most of them don't have defined leadership roles, which allows them to serve as advisors to enlisted and NCO. Company grade officers are lieutenants and captains. They have general knowledge about many different jobs--an artillery officer needs to know something about the entire indirect fire field, but he usually won't know as much about forward observation as a forward observer, or as much about firing as a gun section chief. Their job is to lead and to plan small actions. Field grade officers--majors and colonels--lead lots of troops and have more knowledge than company grade officers. General officers lead large formations like divisions and corps. Warrant officers are specialists in their field; except for pilots warrant officers are drawn from the ranks of sergeants. Most of them don't want to join the "commissioned officer" ranks and become generalists. A sergeant who wanted to be a generalist would have gone to OCS instead of to Warrant Officer Candidate Course.

When do you have to capitalize Sergeant Major?

Just as in any formal title, if you are writing about a specific sergeant major, such as Sergeant Major Plummer in the 7th Cavalry in Vietnam, the words are capitalized.Non-specific references to sergeants major in general are not capitalized.
