In Spain, most people will have paella, which is a rice and seafood dish, or tortilla espanola which is similar to a cornbread. Tapas is a variety of cold cut meats and cheeses usually served between lunch and supper.
They also have the 'first dish' and the 'second dish.' You can choose between one or the other, or if your lucky you can get both. Normally, the first dish will be full of vegetables and the second dish is usually meat. The menu will usually have the two dishes, bread, drink and dessert (not often though)
Tortilla española is a big omelette made of eggs and fried potatoes.
We always have 1st and 2nd dish. The 1st dish is usually something light like a soup or a salad and the 2nd dish may be meat, fish, pork or chicken for example. Thsi can be cooked in many different ways: grilled, with sauce, bolied, fried or whatever.
Then comes the desert: usually fruit or something sweet like pudding and of course, coffee and some people have a little bit of liquor after it.
When do we have only one dish? For example, paella: it contains the characterisitics of 1st and 2nd, that is rice and fish or chicken, so it is considered to be both in one.
The Mediterranean as in the Spanish eat their dinner at about 9 o'clock, but because of the time difference which is two hours after us in England it would be 11 o'clock. A typical breakfast for the Spanish would be a drink called Café con leche. This drink is the Spanish version of espresso coffee which contains a lot of extremely hot and frothy milk. To a sweet roll known as bolos accompanies the drink as they do not eat much for breakfast. Other accompaniments to the breakfast drink include magdalenas and the hot favorite lemon flavored cupcakes along with sugary churros (doughnuts). This is a basic and traditional breakfast mostly for adults.
Children are usually not allowed to drink strong coffee at a young age. This is why they often drink hot or cold chocolate milk depending on the weather. Again a sweet roll or other traditional breakfast item accompanies their drink. Breakfast cereals have increased over the past 20 years. But this is mostly in the younger and modern generations. The old school Spaniards stick to the original breakfast tradition.
hope this helps!
