In some ways, yes. Alchemy was a mix of chemistry, spirituality and magic.

What makes you think its an occult? We dont report to one man only God almighty. No secrets we welcome all. People dont like us because we don't celebrate birthdays and such and are devoted to God. BTW in case you didnt know, Occultism is the term used to describe the study of occult practices including (but not limited to) magic, alchemy, extra-sensory perception, astrology, spiritualism, and divination (Wikipedia definition).
They have long been opposed to Occult studies and practices- such as astrology and spiritualistic seances ( conversations or communicaitons with Ghosts).and so on. as late as l968 an occult-like Carnival Act- Roltair"s Illusion- where an attractive- usually in full dress Girl vanishes in what is obviously a casket- was BANNED from all Church Carnivals on sacrilegious grounds. It made interesting headlines- Bishop Bans Lewd Carnival Act! To this day they tend to oppose Stage Magic, often taking sadomasochistic forms I needn"t get into. Alchemy used secret codes and was considered an Occult art. naturally- it got the axe.

The Phoenix comes from graeco-roman mythology (though there is reason to believe that it may come from even earlier sources like the Sumerian and Babylonian). It has always been a mythical creature like the Unicorn, Chimera and Homunculus. However the Phoenix could be considered occult due to its use as a symbol for the "Great Work" in Alchemy; the formation of the philosophers stone.
Horror fiction scares you... Occult fiction involves the paranormal or satanism. Horror might involve occult subjects, and Occult might scare you... so there is a lot of crossover. But that is the difference. There are Horror books that are definitely not occult and Occult books that are not horror.
