The very modern (only since the 1970s) and politically correct but legally dubious term is First Nations.
This only refers to native people who are notInuit (Eskimo) or Metis (mixed-blood peoples). The term First Nations has no legal definition so many native people refuse to use it, referring to themselves as Haida, Tlingit and so on.
The US has decided that the Indigenous people of America should be called Native Americans. Not all Natives like being called that. Nor do they like being called Indian. Most just call themselves Native or whatever their tribe is. If you are not sure or feel to uncomfortable with calling them that, just call them Native if you don't know what their tribe is. You can never go wrong with that. Some people think they should be referred to as simply "Americans" since they were her first and that everyone else should be called European-American, Asian-American, African-American etc.
