Cherubim (sing: cherub) are mentioned in several books of The Bible. Most of these mentions are of an ornamental statue with wings, such as the two cherubim that surrounded the mercy seat. In Genesis, the Lord set a cherub with a blazing sword to stop anyone from returning to the Garden of Eden. In Psalm 18, God rode upon a cherub. Scholars believe that the cherubim were sphinx-like creatures, with the wings of an eagle and the face of a man.
