The current US Federal Court uses Case Management/Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) formatting system and has done so since 1996. In this system, the first two digits are the year that the case was initiated. This is followed by a two letter abbreviation of the type of case followed by a sequence number. The following three letters are the initials of the presiding judge and can be added to if it is forwarded to another judge or magistrate.
