crocodile'ability to sink in water lies in a diiference in its haemoglobin.this difference allows an increase in hydrogen carbonate ion, resulting from the increase in carbon dioxide gas,to release more of the oxygen carrying by the crocodile haemoglobin, enabling the crocodile to survive under water.

Crocs normally stay underwater for only a couple of minutes, but if they feel threatened they could stay underwater for about half an hour. If they felt really threatend and went into hibernated state, they could stay under water for about two hours. They can do this because their lungs have adapted to be huge and that with one tiny exhale they sink to the bottom. To stay under for two hours they can slow their heartbeat and deflate their lungs.

Crocodiles, like most animals, are normally heavier than water, or they could not submerge. When they inhale air, they establish a "neutral buoyancy" that would keep them floating at or just below the water's surface, with very little muscular effort.

They are also able to stay submerged longer because their bodies do not need to use oxygen to maintain body temperature, as in warmblooded animals.

According to an internet search, crocodiles apparently do not swallow food under water because they would imbibe too much water with the food - and would not necessarily drown. The palatal valve closes off the esophagus and the trachea so water does not flow in. Crocs consume their food at or above the surface of the water.
