AnswerThere is so much room for culture on this one. It means mostly acceptance. It means "I accept you". Like anything else, it can be done sympathetically and without meaning. but if you were to really break it down, it means you are accepting each other.

It means someone just wrapped their arms around you and possibly squeezed a little.

There are all different kinds of hugs, each meaning different things.

- a hug where s/he puts their arms around your shoulders and distances their waste from yours means they're just being friendly and don't care to really hug you. it doesn't mean they don't think you're cool or don't like you, maybe they're shy or they just don't know you well enough to give you are more intimate hug.

- a hug where her/his arms rub your back as you hug means they're happy to see you, but they're probably still being polite. it's also the kind of hug friends give when they're being sympathetic and understanding. it can mean, "i'm here for you."

- hugs where s/he puts their arms around your waist means they're trying to get more intimate, but starting subtly and slowly.

- when someone hugs you and rubs their hands/fingers through your hair, they're extremely happy to see you and think the world of you. they could like you as more than a friend, feel sexually comfortable with you, or have missed you a lot.

- when someone picks you up and spins you around as they hug you, they're extremely happy! (in possibly more than one way.) maybe they're just happy to see you or are excited about something else and want to hug you because they're so happy about something else. or maybe they're being playful and are really comfortable around you, which can't be a bad thing =) =)

and finally, there's one thing you have to know. when you hug someone, what it means is usually determined by how long you hug them for. if you hug someone intimately for a long time, it's pretty self-explanatory because that means they don't want to let go and want to spend time in your arms. if someone hugs you for a short amount of time, they're probably being polite or feel awkward or shy. if a hug feels comfortable and warm, that's a good sign of a good connection and there could be something there =). if it feels awkward, maybe you just need to get to know him/her better and see what kind of hug comes along later.
