Besides doing the blood work as described above, it's simply a series of observations made by the doctor. It's a very comfortable setting, so don't worry. The most invasive part of the procedure is equivalent to a massage on the front part of your neck. The doctor will just ask questions such as if you have noticed any fluctuations in weight recently, how you compare to others with regards to if you feel excessively hot or cold in certain environments. He/she will ask if you noticed any changes in hair distribution or texture, and he'll probably ask to look at your throat while you swallow once or twice. It's simple and it's fast. The doctor is doing all this to ensure that you are okay, so relax, smile, and know that you're being taken care of.
When a doctor checks your thyroid they will feel around your neck as you tilt your head back and swallow. If they notice any protrusions near the thyroid gland, they will order blood work to check the thyroid hormone levels. Then they will ask if you have been experiencing any symptoms of a thyroid condition, and if you have a family member who has a thyroid condition. Another test they will order to further evaluate any suspicious growths felt during a neck check is a thyroid ultrasound scan.

Laboratory testing for the blood levels of TSH is often done to check for abnormal thyroid function such as hypothyroidism (lowered thyroid function) and hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid function) and may also be checked when testing female infertility problems, among other things.
