Take a good dose of vitamin C daily - the "good" dose varies from person to person, however I'd take 3-4 grams of pure, buffered vitamin C, like sodium ascorbate powder (not in tablets).
Like with any bacterial inflammation vitamin C is very good putting it down, when you take sufficient dose over time.
