Drafters are classified by the type of work they do and by the amount of responsibility they have. Senior drafters take the initial information and ideas and develop the final construction drawings. These drawings include both the plans of the building and the details of construction. Junior drafters, who work under senior drafters, draw up plans and details that senior drafters have developed, and yes they are closely supervised by senior drafters. A junior drafter is an intern-level position in an architectural company, they are usually required to have good manual drafting and lettering skills and be trainable on a computer-aided drafting (CAD) system.

Many of the provisions in the UCITA were first proposed as a modification to Article 2 of the UCC. Why do you think the drafters decided to propose it as a separate and distinct uniform act

Drafters' earnings vary by specialty, location, and level of responsibility. Median annual earnings of architectural and civil drafters were $39,190 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $31,460 and $47,800. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $25,670, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $57,670. Median annual earnings for architectural and civil drafters in architectural, engineering, and related services were $38,760. Median annual earnings of mechanical drafters were $43,000 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $34,090 and $54,240. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $27,490, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $67,650. Median annual earnings for mechanical drafters in architectural, engineering, and related services were $44,560. Median annual earnings of electrical and electronics drafters were $43,180 in May 2004. The middle 50 percent earned between $33,920 and $56,110. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $27,600, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $72,050. In architectural, engineering, and related services, median annual earnings for electrical and electronics drafters were $42,200.

Most often called CADD (computer-aided drafting and design) specialists, mechanical drafters utilize programs to design and develop a variety of plans. These plans may be used to design buildings or mechanical objects such as medical equipment or day to day items such as stoves or other appliances. Some positions may focus on robotics or toy design but most often the design will be focused on the moving parts and its applications. Many mechanical drafters focus on mechanical parts that are used in industries like automotive, machinery or other tools. They make design the dimensions, additional parts necessary and function when drafting plans for new equipment. Within the field of mechanical drafting are specialized positions that may focus on military mechanical design, aeronautic drafting or marine mechanics. This job often requires long hours in front of a computer and can be a sedentary position in many cases. Entry level mechanical drafters may work as an assistant or under supervision until they gain more job experience. In some positions they make work as part of a team or on their own. Higher level drafters may lead teams or do the supervising. People skills are important to build as many mechanical drafters have to interact with customers or report to other teams and share information. Average salaries for mechanical drafters are around $39,000 annually with some earning over $43,000 per year. Specialized mechanical drafters may earn more based on experience and education or work on a per-contract basis. Often mechanical drafters may find employment within large industries or development firms. Very experienced drafters may earn over $63,000 annually. Training for mechanical drafters is at minimum a two year process on top of a high school diploma or equivalent. Often a four year degree or training is preferred. Specialized fields may require additional training or experience. Vocational schools offer specialized training and the American Design Drafting Association offers certification for drafters that tests on basic drafting concepts.
