The first pillar of Islam, the Shahadah, is the profession of faith. A rough translation is "there is no deity but God and Mohammad is his Prophet." This is meant to elucidate the belief in the oneness of God and to accept Mohammad as His final prophet-- a simple daily reminder of the core beliefs.
The second is Salat, or the daily prayers. There are five at specific times of theday and can be performed anywhere. The only restriction is that one must be oriented towards Mecca.
The third is Zakat, which is charity or alms giving. It is usually 2.5% of annual income and is usually used to help the community. It resembles a tax, but has a more formal legal aspect in that tradition stipulates who is required to give Zakat and from what kind of resources. Furthermore it provides a link between spiritual welfare and community wellbeing. It can also be considered a 'loan' to God, since one's wealth is only temporary on this earth.
The fourth pillar of faith is Sawm, basically the fasting done during the month of Ramadan. During this time one abstains from food or pleasure from dawn to senset each day as a reminder of the important dimensions in life.
The fifth and final pillar of the Islamic faith is the Hajj. The Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca made by a follower of Islam. It is not something every Muslim is able to do, but those who are able often earns the respect of their peers.
