Are women allowed on submarines?

It depends on the real question. If meant literally, then yes, women are allowed on submarines. They can visit some submarines. If the question is, "Are women allowed to serve/work on submarines?" then it depends on the country. In the Royal Navy (UK) they are not allowed to serve at present. The United States, however, is gearing up to allow some women officers to serve aboard U.S. Navy nuclear submarines.

What letters are placed after an officer's name to indicate he is a Supply Officer who is Qualified in Submarines?

The Warfare Designation letters for those like myself who are or have been Qualified in Submarines is "SS". For example, my own rate/rank is STS1(SS), which stands for "Sonar Technician, Submarines, First Class(Submersible Ships)" Generally, specialty officers (officers who aren't Line Officers, such as Doctors or Pork Chops (Supply Officers)) are titled with their particular specialty as letters after their rank and name. For example, a Supply Lt. named Donald Mason, who is Qualified in Submarines, would be: Lt. Donald Mason, SO(SS) - where "SO" denotes Supply Officer, and SS is Submersible Ships, or Qualified in Submarines. Specialty officers also wear insignia denoting their particular area of expertise on their collar along with their rank insignia. For example, Line Officers wear rank insignia on both collars (a Lt. would wear railroad tracks on both sides) but an SO would wear Lt. bars on one side and the Supply Corps insignia on the other collar.

Why were submarines so important?

Can't see them. They sneak up on you. When they were first invented 'en mass' in WWI they were considered cowardly by surface naval officers. Akin to shooting a man in the back!

Can girls be on a submarine?

Females have been riding submarines for many years, but primarily only as riders (e.g., Contractors, Intelligence analysts, etc.). Up until recently, females serving aboard U.S. Navy submarines was restricted - however, with recent changes in policy, female officers will begin serving aboard FBM submarines within the next few years. Most navies with nuclear submarines (e.g., Royal Navy) don't allow women to serve aboard submarines due to the unique health risks that women are exposed to if serving aboard for long periods of time.

Currently, women have to have their own toilets and beds. Consequently, architects are going to have to design bigger and more expensive submarines to acommendate those extra rooms, beds, and toilets. In addition, supply officers are going to have requisition SPECIAL hygiene material, as well as find storage facilities on board the submarine to maintain them.
