For example, my own rate/rank is STS1(SS), which stands for "Sonar Technician, Submarines, First Class(Submersible Ships)" Generally, specialty officers (officers who aren't Line Officers, such as Doctors or Pork Chops (Supply Officers)) are titled with their particular specialty as letters after their rank and name. For example, a Supply Lt. named Donald Mason, who is Qualified in Submarines, would be: Lt. Donald Mason, SO(SS) - where "SO" denotes Supply Officer, and SS is Submersible Ships, or Qualified in Submarines. Specialty officers also wear insignia denoting their particular area of expertise on their collar along with their rank insignia. For example, Line Officers wear rank insignia on both collars (a Lt. would wear railroad tracks on both sides) but an SO would wear Lt. bars on one side and the Supply Corps insignia on the other collar.
