Female hormones, when taken in pill form or when produced by the man's own body, affect the male body in many ways. Effects are both permanent and impermanent. In otherwise healthy males, excess estrogen signals a problem.

2. Female hormones affect two categories of men: those who want to become female, and those who produce excess estrogen on their own. Men who are transitioning to the female gender (transsexuals) take artificial female hormones to help them achieve the process. Until recently, only estrogen was administered, but now a combination of progesterone and estrogen are used.

   Other men experience high female hormone levels because their bodies begin making too much estrogen due to a health condition. This condition can be caused by excess fat, aging, toxins in the environment, illness, medications or alcohol or drug use.

3. There are two types of female hormones that can affect men: estrogen and progesterone.

   Estrogen comes in three varieties. E3 (Estriol) is only produced during pregnancy (and therefore never by men). E2 (Estradiol) is produced in the sex organs of both men and women. E1 (Estrone) is made by fat and the adrenal gland.

   Progesterone is made by the corpus luteum, or the ovulating follicle, in women, and also by the placenta during pregnancy. It is not produced by men and will only affect them if they take it as a medication.

4. Estrogen causes male breast growth, shrunken testicles, decrease in sexual interest and mood swings. Body fat will become more feminized, collecting in the hips and thighs instead of in the stomach. The man will sweat less. Estrogen also causes excess body and facial hair to stop growing and the facial skin to thin and soften. The hormone can also increase the chances of male Breast cancer, blood clots and liver or gall bladder issues. Are Effects Reversible?
5. Taking progesterone causes sperm levels to go to zero and the testicles to shrink. It is used for transsexual women because it helps breasts grow to full maturation; without progesterone, the breasts don't develop beyond buds.
6. Breast growth, along with its accompanying dark and enlarged nipples, will not reverse. However, libido and sperm count should return to normal after female hormones are stopped. Body odor and male hair will also return.
