Alritey then, let's look at why there were gargoyles in the first place...Early Christians would usually build there churches where ever the pagans had gathered to worship their ancient gods...Which seemed like a good idea at the time, as the people who came to these places were coming to worship, and the priests would be there to tell them of the new religion....

Now who would build these churches??? Obviously the bishops and cardinals would want the very best of masons to build these buildings so they got the older masons with the most knowledge of building....And who did they worship??? The old gods they grew up with, but werent allowed to worship anymore, not if they wanted the fat juicy contract offered by the papal leaders.... So some, not all, would add figures and signs to the buildings that represented their beloved gods....

Now what does this have to do with tattoos of gargoyles??? Maybe nothing at all. Maybe it is a way of waving their pagan flag without wearing the usual pentagram..... But DONT think that everyone who has one is a pagan, because they also are considered as guardians ....And a great lot of people just like the way they look as decorations....Hope this helps.........TatuBaron

What is a gargoyle and what purpose does it serve?

A gargoyle is technically a functioning waterspout. In medieval times (and occasionally today), they were carved as grotesque figures to protect from evil spirits. However, the lines have become blurred and people frequently refer to any grotesque ornamental carving as a gargoyle. However, a gargoyle need not represent anything. Any waterspout relieving water from a building is a gargoyle. I am confident of this answer. I have a bachelor of architectural history and a master of architecture and I am a licensed architect.
