It depends on where you are. The Great White Shark is considered vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation. International trade in Great White Sharks requires a permit. As a vulnerable species, it is not illegal to kill unless you are in one of the countries which gives full protection to the Great White Shark. Great White Sharks are fully protected within 370 kilometres (200 nmi) of New Zealand and from fishing by New Zealand-flagged boats. Great White Sharks are protected by the California Endangered Species Act which requires an Incidental Take Permit to harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, or collect any threatened or endangered species. Great White Sharks are also protected by Namibia, Israel, Malta, Australia and South Africa.

Somewhat! Although there have been the most reported attacks involving great white sharks they do not like human flesh. If the great white shark does attack it is normally only a test bite, meaning there senses are impared and they bit the human to see if it is indeed their food. However most shark attacks are not deadly. There are 66 reported great white attacks in the last two centuries and only about 6 of them were deadly. So to answer your question no, not if you know how to act around them but if not then maybe.
Be brave and act defensively. Don't panic and remember, most people are not attacked by sharks. Lots of divers have met great whites in the ocean and lived to tell about it. Also remember, the great white shark probably saw you long before you saw him. If the shark wanted to attack you, the shark would attack you before you had a chance to defend yourself. If you see a shark and it has not attacked you prior to seeing it, you have a good chance of not being attacked, if you act brave and act defensively.
