land.Green on a map usually means land.
Green usually represents land unless your thinking about Golf courses. if it did mean water it proprably be seaweed
Brown
It doesn't mean grassland. Green on a topographic map means there is enough cover to hide a tank. It was developed in one of the world wars I think.
A Physical map shows elevation.
It would depend on the particular map you are using, but in my experience brown usually represents mountains/hills and is therefore usually higher than the green used to depict grasslands at lower altitude.

depends on the map maker who usually decides what's what; but normaly darker colors on a map mean higher temperatures / heavier rains / stronger winds etcetera.
Green
Blue is typically used to depict high elevations on a physical map. Green is usually reserved for lower elevations such as valleys or plains, while brown is often used for contour lines to represent changes in elevation.
