green areas are usually plains, while brown/yellow may be more mountainous
It doesn't mean grassland. Green on a topographic map means there is enough cover to hide a tank. It was developed in one of the world wars I think.
Green usually represents land unless your thinking about Golf courses. if it did mean water it proprably be seaweed

depends on the map maker who usually decides what's what; but normaly darker colors on a map mean higher temperatures / heavier rains / stronger winds etcetera.
