Hedgehogs are poky on one side and smooth on the other I know this because I have one and they make great pets but not for little kids because they are known to murder little kids with their quills because they never had the childhood they wanted, because they were orphaned by their family and had to live in a petshop.
Hedgehogs, by nature, are shy creatures. They are prey animals, and have developed to respond to any threat by defensive acts; putting their quills down, rolling into a ball, hissing, spiting, clicking, and popping.
However, a well socialized and handled hedgehog will not have as many of these reactions, and will be a fun loving pet. Some like to snuggle, some like to explore.

A hedgehogs underbelly and facial fur texture is hard to explain. It's "wirey" but very soft at the same time.
