It can be from pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). It can occur if your body does not metabolize the amylase that is normally excreted. It can also occur from trauma to the pancreas due to an injury or surgery. Diseases or surgery/injury to the salivary glands can cause it as well as some intestinal diseases. There are S-type isoamylases and P-type isoamylases which each have their own indications for a disease or inflammation. There are multiple other symptoms or indicators which must be taken into consideration when giving a diagnosis for elevated amylase levels.
