Something reasonably soft which they can shape into a nest-like structure. If not provided with anything better ducks will lay eggs on the ground, especially under hedges.

Bluebird says: Yes, providing them with something soft such as hay or straw is helpful. Be careful though that what you give them doesn't have lice or other little 'itchies,'because they wont lay their eggs if they are effected by lice.
