"messes up" is a pretty broad term, but if a defense lawyer doesn't like the result of a case, and has a legitimate reason other than "I don't like the result", they can file an appeal to a higher court.

Whether or not that appeal will be heard is up to that court, and there's no guarantee that the decision will change.

Who does Court of Appeals hear?

The Court of Appeals hears appeals from the trial courts. Have you ever seen a court room drama on TV? The lawyers cross examine the witnesses. The other side objects to a line of questioning. The lawyers appeal to the Judge. The judge makes his decision. The judge runs the courtroom. He supervises the lawyers. Down in front a court reporter is recording the trial. She takes down everything that is being said. At the end of the trial, the Judge reads the law and instructs the jury. The Jury deliberates and reaches a verdict. It may be a civil case. It may be a criminal case. What happened if the Judge made a mistake? What happened if the evidence did not fit the case? If the Judge supervises the Lawyers, who supervises the Judge? The court of Appeals. A lawyer can have the Court of Appeals review the case. A lawyer writes up the reasons why the Court of Appeals should review the case. His reasons are called a brief. He submits them to the court.

US Courts of Appeals have the authority to hear cases from lower courts are called courts of?

The US Courts of Appeals Circuit Courts hear appeals from US District Courts under their appellate jurisdiction. They do not hear cases of original jurisdiction (trials).Appellate courts review the written account of the case with the appeal lawyer's statements of the mistakes made during the trial or of misapplied laws or constitutional challenges.Example: At a simpler level, I used to explain to my students that the judge supervises the lawyers and the appeals court supervises the judge. The judge decides when lawyers argue with each other and keeps the trial flowing. Thus if the judge sides with one lawyer the appeals court can say he made a mistake. The judge stops a particular line of questioning. The appeals court can say he should not have done so. If the judge gives incorrect incorrect instructions to the jury, the appeals court can say he did it wrong.
