Different elements within the compound/ion.
In complex chemical formulae, it is MUCH easier to write one or two letters rather than writing out all of their names in full.
They are fairly simple, most of them:
H - hydrogen
Li - lithium
Mg - magnesium
Si - silicon
O - oxygen
But they can't all be the first two letters or most obvious letters, there are too many to do that. So some have different symbols to distinguish them:
Au - gold
Ag - silver
K - potassium
Sr - strontium
Hg - Mercury
Fe - iron
The letters represent the chemicals, like O is oxygen, H is hydrogen, He is helium, K is potassium, Au is gold, Hg is mercury, C is carbon... etc. letters in a chemical equation are the representation of elements of the Periodic Table
for example H2O (water) H=hydrogen <2 parts and O represents oxygen

Chemical symbols represent chemical elements and chemical formulas represent chemical compounds.
it represents the composton
The letters are called Symbols. They represent elements on periodic table.
The letters on the periodic table represent the name of the elements. They are called the element's "symbols." They are usually related to the English names, but some, like lead, are related to their Latin names.

Znl is not a recognized symbol for any element on the periodic table. The symbols on the periodic table consist of one or two letters and are used to represent the different chemical elements. Please double-check the symbol or provide more information if possible.
Cd is Cadmium.
The letters are a one- or two-letter symbol assigned to each element

'K' represents Potassium on the periodic table. Not all the letters relate to the element in there English name, some are named after their latin name.

The letter (or letters) represents the abbreviation for that element, i.e. it represents the symbol used to represent that element.
The letters on the periodic table are the chemical symbols of the chemical elements.
The letters "J" and "Q" do not appear in the Periodic Table .
