Midwives do many things, and what they are allowed to do by law varies by where they practice. In my state (Wisconsin), we provide routine prenatal care for mothers including all vitals, blood draws, urinalysis, fundal height, fetal heart tones, and fetal positioning. We provide labor preparation and support and are on-call for the mother throughout her pregnancy and postpartum period for questions and assistance. We manage the labor and birth and stay for a minimum of 2 hours postpartum to make sure that mom and baby are well. We prepare the birth certificate, do a newborn exam, assist with breastfeeding, and do newborn metabolic blood tests. We continue to see the mother and baby for visits until the baby is 6 weeks old.
