To strip mine, the mining operation requires the removal of the overburden. That's all the stuff on top of the material that the mining company wants to extract. With the overburden removed, and the material removed, overburden is replaced and suitable surface cover is re-established. Some thought and planning are included in coutouring the surface to "match" the area around it. The mining company might plant trees, shrubs or just sow grasses on the land, according to the nature of the surrounding vegetation, and also their agreement with the regulators who will inspect the finished operation.
