the Romanos believed in basically the same gods that the Greeks believed in. Though in Rome the gods were much more stern and believed in more discipline then the Greek gods did. Some of the Roman gods consist of Neptune god of the sea, Pluto god of the underworld, Venus goddess of love and beauty, Jupiter king of the gods and god of the sky, and Juno goddess of marriage. Though there are few listed there are many other god and goddesses that the Romans beleived in.

The Romans had a polytheistic religion. They had many gods, each of them representing different aspects of life and different crops (as agriculture was essential for survival). They followed rituals and performed sacrifices in their honour to placate them. Failure to do so would bring the wrath of the gods.

The aristocracy's ideal of the Romans was one of hardy farmers with strong fibre and with rectitude, as exemplified by the motto dignitas, integritas et gravitas. This clashed with the reality that with imperial expansion and urban growth corruption became endemic and a large entrepreneurial class of merchants, bankers, money lenders and investors in shipping and mining developed. Therefore, this ideal translated into nostalgia for an idealised past when Rome was more rural and for ancestors who were made to fit the ideal.

The Romans were proud of their military prowess and success. The commanders of victorious wars were heroes and celebrated the victory with a triumphal parade.
