People go on pilgrimages for different reasons such as, to wash away their sins, to feel closer to God, to be pure and more
It varies a great deal, depending on the pilgrims and the nature of the pilgrimage.
They go there to ask for forgiveness from God for all the bad things they have done in their whole life. Because they worked so hard to get to one of the pilgrimages, there are more chances of God to forgive them.

I hope this helped for everyone.
Pilgrims traveled to distant shrines to worship. On the way to and from the shrine, they could be devout, if they wanted to be, but they could also treat the trip as a vacation, see the country, and enjoy themselves.

Chaucer's book, The Canterbury Tales, provides a look at pilgrims travelling.
