Historically, pilgrimages have been important for people to show their love for God or saints. People would have mainly gone to (and continue to visit today) Compiago de Compestella, Rome, Canterbury, or Jerusalem.
On a pilgrimage Hindus visit a variety of places depending on their own custom beliefs. The definition of this word basically means that you are strengthening faith in your current religious belief.
Here are some places that you can visit:

Varanasi - A town that is close to the Ganges River
The Himalayas - A mountain range in India that is believed to have a shrine at the top that if you reach, you will gain a reward.
In Biblical times, offerings were made at the Temple (animal and crops).
Today, Jews pay homage to the Temple by offering prayers at the Kotel (Western Wall).
For Christians there is a path that follows all of Jesus' steps and places he had "likely" been during his own pilgrimage to Jerusalem (including the Kotel).

Pilgrims
During medieval times, rich and poor people did go on pilgrimages to the same holy sites, such as Jerusalem or Santiago de Compostela. However, rich pilgrims could afford better accommodations and services along the way, while poor pilgrims often relied on charity and stayed in less comfortable conditions.
ILL AND OLD PEOPLE
Catholic people were told that if they prayed at holy places called shrines, they could be forgiven their sins or be cured of illnesses. This is why people took the risk of going on pilgrimages.
