A legacy is what a person leaves behind, as a result of their life's work or even just ordinary activity. For example, a person could say, "The legacy of my father is I inherited a strong work ethic."
When people ask about the "legacy of this President", it means what this president did that he leaves behind.

Note: While legacy most often refers to good or positive acts, it can also mean bad or negative acts. As examples:
  • One legacy from my mother was to never trust outsiders.
  • Nixon left the legacy of Vietnam and Watergate.
