In the old days we flew via land marks and even followed roads. As time went on, we started using something called ADF's (Automatic direction finders) and flew from each radio station. We could dial in a radio station and fly right to the antenna.

The next generation of equipment was called VOR's. These were special radio transmitters on the ground that would tell us where we were and how far away we were from the transmitter through an extra transmitter called a DME (Distance measuring Equipment).

Airways were setup between these VORs to keep us flying in certain area and away from other planes. You can see these VORs on the ground. They look like an upside down ice cream cone with antennas all around the building. They can be seen near airports and in fields in the middle of no where.

The next generation was called LOARN. This was an adaptation of equipment used to allow ships to find their way.

Currently we use GPS to navigate. We still are able to use VORs and even ADF's. The main use for the ADFS now is for pilots to listen to football games (joke). The GPS has allowed us to go "off roads" and fly to places very direct. I used to have to follow several road to fly from Tampa to Milwaukee. Now I fly direct.
