Plants are autotrophic and produce "food" in the form of simple sugars through he process of photosynthesis.

Physically the process of photosynthesis requires: light (not necessarily sunlight), Carbon Dioxide and water - and releases oxygen as a byproduct.

While the plants still rely on external sources of nutrients (macro and micro elements) in order to perform other necessary metabolic functions.
