Catholic AnswerWhen they are functioning as a bishop, the bishops in the Medieval period wore exactly the same thing that they do today, well, a traditional dressed Bishop celebrating in the Extraordinary Form (in Latin). A Bishop wore a chasuble, just like a priest when celebrating Mass, at other services he would wear a cope. He wears a zucchetta (skull cap), with a biretta or mitre. Bishop's choir robes are purple, they wear a lace rocket over it. For most things Bishops wear gloves; the signs of their office are a pectoral cross and a ring. When they are in procession, preaching, or listening to the Gospel, they wear their miter and hold their crosier (shepherd's staff) in their left hand. A Bishop in the Ordinary form wears the same thing, but usually not as fancy, and usually skips the gloves, but never the skullcap, miter, pectoral cross and ring; plus the crosier if they are in Church.

The dress of bishops and archbishops was based on that of a priest, with certain additions. A bishop wore exactly the same as a priest but with a mitre, a bishop's crozier and a ring.

The dress of an archbishop was the same as for a bishop but with much more elaborate decoration, mainly in the form of embroidery. Specific colours might be reserved for an archbishop and the cope (a large, full-length woollen cloak fastened with a single strap across the chest) would be frequently worn as day-to-day dress over the linen alb, stola, dalmatic, maniple and silk or wool chasuble. He would also have an elaborate processional cross instead of the crozier.

When they appear in public, modern popes typically wear a white simar over their usual clerical street clothes. The simar is similar to the priestly cassock (Keanu Reeve's character in The Matrix wore a black cassock, a long-sleeved, solid-colored garment that fits the chest and waist closely like a jumpsuit, except below the waist instead of pants legs, the garment is an ankle-length coat or robe.) The Pope's cassock is white and includes a matching cape, a mozzetta, which is draped across the chest and back and ends at the elbow. Wrapped around the simar is the fascia, a sash that is fastened by tying and with the long ends embroidered with the pope's coat-of-arms. The pectoral, a large cross, is worn suspended from a chain around the neck. Finally, the pope wears a matching white zucchetto, a skullcap somewhat similar to the yarmulke worn by Jewish men.
