However, when fish are carrying live young inside, they continue with their regular behaviors until it is time to release the young. They usually become somewhat secretive when ready to give birth.

Most fish release unfertilized eggs, which are fertilized and develop outside the body of the fish. Thus these fish cannot be considered to be pregnant at any time.

If a fish is kept in a tiny container it obviously can not exercise as much as it otherwise would so it would be inclined to put down fatty tissue. If the basic rules of fishkeeping are kept this should not be a problem. The basic rules are as follows. :- 1 inch of fish needs AT LEAST 1 gallon of water (3 gallons per inch is far better). :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs to have at least 50% of its water replaced every week. If the above rules are followed fish stand a good chance of survival provided the special food and water requirements of the individual species are observed too. I can guarantee that failure to observe the above basic rules will result in the fish having constant health problems.
