I guess you mean sandals. It is much easier to march wearing sandals than to march bare footed. True, but the Roman soldier never marched in sandals. He wore the "caliga" or military boot. It was a very sturdy shoe/boot. However it could be mistaken for a sandal type of footwear because it was constructed of several straps sewn closely together. But there is where the similarities ended. Not only was the caliga made of more sturdy materials than the sandal, it had hobnailed soles both for traction and durability. The pattern of the hobnails is identical to the pattern of the support in today's training shoes.

Sandals were an important part of the Roman soldier's attire. They provided protection for the soldier's feet from rough terrain and helped to prevent injuries. They also offered traction and stability, allowing soldiers to maneuver effectively during battles.
