Solid state hard drives use Flash Memory (a type of electronically programmable ROM) instead of a spinning magnetic disk to store data. Without the moving parts you can't have head crashes, etc. They are much more reliable but also more expensive.

They do the same thing regular hard drives do. But they accomplish everything faster while spending less power. Also due to the fact that they do not have movable parts, they have better shock resistance.
