Cigarettes and alcohol functions are not stimulants... they are sedatives. Sedatives slow down the chemical reactions in your body, (slows down the impulse, which travels across the synapse). What this means is that they slow down your reactions, and they make you feel relaxed and calm.

Sugar and coffee are stimulants, because they stimulate chemical reactions within your body. They make the electrical impulses travel across the synapse's faster. Making you more alert and awake.
