Contrary to popular belief, Catholics do not worship Mary.

Let me put it into perspective:

To Catholics, Mary is the mother of God, and my extension, the mother of everyone, whether they accept it or not. They revere Mary above other saints because of all that she has done.

A popular quote on the subject: 'Mary is the mother of God. So if you want to get in good with God, who do you get close to? His mom.'- anonymous

Mary is treated as the greatest saint because she is the only person (Besides Jesus) who has never tasted sin, Original or personal. That is why we call her "The immaculate conception", born without sin.

She is the mother of Jesus whom we believe as God, therefore we give her the title "Mother of God" This doesn't mean she is greater than God, it only means that she gave birth to God.

She is very close to God and therefore we pray to asking for her intercessions (For her to pray for us). This is a form of humility and an effective way of praying since Mary is closer than we are to God. She is a mediator. We don't worship her.

We give her other honorable names such as "Queen of heaven" (Since the book of Revelation depict her as very powerful), "Holy virgin" (She never had intercourse in her whole life) etc. She is very pleasing to God.
