When you open a case file you should note that everything you see in the file was prepared by a court clerk and a record was made for every filing and every action taken. In a larger court system there may be various clerks that are assigned certain duties and those duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • They open new files when a new case is filed and create a written or computer index of filings and orders in each case.
  • They refile cases files that are used every day.
  • They prepare case files for transfer to the courtroom in preparation for the hearing date.
  • They file and record any filings made by either party in the case such as the complaint, answer, motions, etc.
  • They type up and add every court action to the file such as court orders, decrees, etc., and prepare a copy to be sent to the parties.
  • They prepare certified copies upon request.
  • They retrieve case files requested by the public.
  • Court clerks keep the courts running smoothly, create the records and keep the court records in order so that cases can be retrieved when needed.

I am a crown court clerk. We prepare the papers for cases, arraign defendants(ask them whether they are guilty or not),empanel jurors(swear them in) draw up orders(bail notices, remand, imprisonment and community orders). We generally run the court, call the cases on and with the help of an usher control the court. I find the job extremely interesting. Hope this answers the question.
