The gear abilities allow you to upgrade your vehicle's performance during a race, you can activate one at a time, usually after gathering 20 coins, then 50, then 70. Just keep an eye on your ring amount, when you upgrade it'll subtract the 'cost'.
The effects of the ability vary, but most of them are self-explanatory.
